What is PRP? … And does my pet need it?

Simon Veterinary Surgical is excited to offer platelet-rich plasma (PRP) therapy. This newly developed treatment was originally used as a form of therapy in human medicine, particularly among professional athletes, but is now available for use in veterinary medicine.

In line with our philosophy of providing the highest quality medicine available, our team has received the training and skills to make PRP available for our patients.

Today, we’d like to take a detailed look at what PRP is and how it could help your pet.

How does PRP work?

PRP therapy is a cutting-edge form of regenerative medicine. It takes advantage of the body’s own growth factors to speed up the healing process of sports-related injuries.

It is a very safe and effective procedure because the SVS teams creates the PRP injection from your pet’s own blood, so their system won’t react negatively when it’s administered. Once the PRP is injected into the injured area, growth factors released from platelets help accelerate restoration of tendons, ligaments, muscles, and joints.

How does SVS prepare a PRP injection?

A PRP treatment can be completed at our clinic in less than an hour. The process of preparing a PRP injection involves isolating the platelets from the rest of the blood to create a super concentrated platelet sample.

Here’s how the SVS team does it:

Would my pet benefit from PRP therapy?

PRP is a powerful but short-lived treatment, with effect lasting for just a few weeks. Because of this, we recommend PRP therapy to our patients with acute injuries, such as a torn muscle or ligament.

It can also speed up the recovery process following a surgery. SVS offers PRP as an add-on treatment to most of our procedures; we particularly recommend it following our orthopedic surgeries.

On the other hand, PRP is not a good option for patients with long-term conditions, like arthritis. Instead, SVS recommends addressing arthritis using our scientifically proven joint supplements.

Our teams stays up to date on the latest technology and treatments so you can be confident that your pet is receiving the best care possible.
